Motorcycle accident on I-75 left one man dead

A man from Redford was pronounced dead after a motorcycle crash on Interstate 75 on July 7.

Michigan Police said that the accident occurred near 3 a.m. when the man was lost control of the motorcycle. After losing control, the man’s bike hit construction equipment on the side of the road and he was thrown from the motorcycle on impact.

A portion of the roadway was closed for several hours as the officials investigated, but further details are still being looked into.

Teenager killed after crashing into tree

A teenager was killed in a one-car accident after he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a tree.

According to Michigan State Police, the 17-year-old was driving east when he lost control of the vehicle on a gravel road. After the car left the road, it crashed into a tree and caught fire. The car was totaled and the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency crews. Further details of the accident are still investigated.

Kellogg issues voluntary cereal recall

The headquarters of the Kellogg Company in Michigan has issued a voluntary recall of select Kellogg’s cereal.

The cereal involved in the recall are Corn Pops, Honey Smacks, Fruit Loops and Apple Jacks. These products were recalled for having an off-flavor and smell coming from the bag.

These products were shipped throughout the United States and if you have purchased a recalled item, you are urged not to consume it. There has been reports of symptoms such as diarrhea and nausea occurring after eating the cereal.

Nurses found negligent in nursing home case

A Michigan family has been awarded $4.85 million in a nursing home abuse suit after the death of their family member in 2002. The man died of an morphine overdose while receiving physical therapy at a local nursing home.

A three-week trial ended with the jury finding that the nurses and doctors were negligent in the death of the 76-year-old man by being responsible for the overdose in administering morphine to the patient.

The man was in the home for physical therapy for a non displaced hip fracture. Officials said that the nurses and doctors did not have proper documentation of when the morphine was administered to the man.

Charges filed in death of worker on University campus

Criminal charges have been filed against a masonry company after the death of a worker in a construction accident on the University of Michigan campus.

The company, Davenport Masonry, has been criminally charged with violating the Occupational Safety and Health Act  in Michigan.

The worker was killed in February 2008 after stepping backward on an unguarded scaffold and falling 40 feet to the ground. The man was killed on impact. The company has been charged for allegedly not having a hazard-free workplace, which resulted in the death of the man.

Motorcycle crash in Warren leaves one injured

A Howell man is in critical condition after a motorcycle crash in Warren, according to authorities.

The man was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle eastbound on I-696 when he exited the highway and he inadequately negotiated a curve in the roadway and lost control of the motorcycle.

The bike then flipped multiple times and the man was thrown from the vehicle. Someone driving by called the police and emergency crews transported the man to a hospital in Detroit. Police are still investigating the accident and are urging any witnesses to come forward with information.

Two Detroit students killed, two injured in accident

Two Detroit students were killed in a car accident hours after graduation. Two others involved in the accident were injured.

High school classmates are now mourning the loss of their friends and classmates. One student was driving and their vehicle crashed into the side of an abandoned church just blocks away from the high school.

Two of the teens are currently recovering in the hospital. One of them is in good condition and one of them is in fair condition. A fund has been set up for the families of the victim.

Man killed after being struck by train

A man was walking with two other people when he sat down on a train track in near Wayland. After he sat down, he was struck and killed in a train accident.

Witnesses told police that the train honked his horn and the man either ignored it or did not hear it. The man was struck by a northbound multi-car train. The train tried different ways to stop before reaching the man, but it was unsuccessful. The two people with the man also tried to administer first aid to the man.

Man killed by forklift in industrial accident

A man from Michigan City was killed in a workplace industrial accident at Bulk Transport’s yard in ArcelorMittal.

The 57-year-old mechanic was killed after the forklift he was working on fell over on him, according to the county coroner. The forklift was picked up by a loader in order for it be worked on when it collapsed and fell on top of the mechanic.

The mechanic was alone working on the forklift and was later found by a  Matco Tools employee. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration will be conducting an investigation.

Construction company recieves safety award

The Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration has awarded the Clark Construction Company an award for outstanding safety.

The company has gone more than nine years without a lost time accident. The award was given to the CEO of the company at MIOSHA’s annual meeting. The CEO said that it was an honor to be recognized as a leader in safety and that he is happy to spread the message that having a safe workplace is a great business decision.
