School district facing lawsuit for alleged special ed student abuse

The district of Livonia Public Schools is facing a lawsuit that seeks more than $75,000 in damages. The suit, filed by the mother of a special needs preschooler, alleges that her son was physically abused while attending classes at Webster Elementary School.

child injury lawyerThe district recently released an internal report that outlined the behavior of allegedly abusive teacher Sharon Turbiak. It detailed her tendency to laugh when children fell rather than help them as well as instances where she slapped and yelled at students. She also once locked a wheelchair-bound child in a bathroom for nearly 20 minutes for a time out. There have been complaints about Turbiak from as early as October of last year.

Turbiak has been suspended since April and her resignation from the school will go into effect in March of 2013. She oversaw a multi-district class of 12 children with mental impairments during her tenure at the school.
