Dogs bite 4.7 million people each year in the U.S.

Each year in the United States, approximately 4.7 million people suffer from some form of a dog bite. Out of that large number, 800,000 choose to receive medical attention for their injuries. These damages can be severe in certain situations, and around 386,000 people require immediate medical attention.

The number of dog bite injury claims declined in 2011, but the payout per case rose significantly. Between 2003 and 2011, the average individual payout for a dog bite injury increased by 54 percent to $29,400.

A study was conducted by the Insurance Information Institute in regards to the liability claims in dog bite cases. In 2011, dog bite liability claims accounted for one-third of all homeowner liability claims for the fiscal year.
