According to police officials, the accident occurred when a woman was driving her Buick near Plymouth Road and Meyers when she collided with a bus that was being operated by ABC Student Transportation and transporting students to Detroit Public Schools.

The impact caused the woman to lose control of her car and it traveled across the road to the other side of the street. Man’s family files wrongful death suit against nursing home

The family of former Detroit restaurant owner Kerfoot Lewis has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the nursing home where he passed his final months.

Lewis was a resident of the Henry Ford Village Nursing Home in Dearborn. In April, his family was called in to the home where they found him in pain with a large bruise on his arm and contusions on his wrists. The family took him to a hospital, where it was discovered that his hematoma was the result of a broken arm.

nursing home neglect deathThis raised a lot of questions among Lewis’ many children, some of whom are well known in Detroit, including his son, Deputy Mayor Kirk Lewis, and daughter Krista Conyers. Lewis, aged 90, was bedridden, so how could he have broken his arm without outside interference? Lewis never fully recovered from his arm injury and died two months later.

Nursing home abuse occurs at shockingly high rates in the United States. The National Center for Biotechnology Information has found that as many as 21% of nursing home residents suffered some form of neglect within the last year. Conyers entrusted Lewis’ care to the center, who promised to give him ample attention. Finding him in pain with a broken arm was a betrayal of her trust and is indicative that he may have been neglected.

After months of seeking answers to their concerns about the circumstances surrounding their father’s death, the Lewis family has had enough. They have filed a wrongful death lawsuit because the nursing home would not furnish them with any records or verbal information about how it treated Lewis.

Coping with the loss of a loved one is not easy, especially with the frustrating understanding that the loss should never have occurred. We hope that Lewis’ family can find closure despite the trying circumstances of his death. nike air max 1 nike air max 1 nike air max 1

Amtrak Train Derails in Southwestern Michigan

Federal officials with the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating Amtrak train derailment that occurred in southwestern Michigan over the weekend. Investigators have announced that the train was traveling on the wrong tracks when the incident occurred.

The train  was on the wrong path when a reversed switch occurred and caused the train to go into the railyard. The train was traveling from Chicago to Pontiac when the incident occurred and caused two locomotives as well as one coach to derail off of the tracks.

The derailment occurred just near the Indiana border and caused the injury of dozens of passengers on board. The train stopped just 21 feet from a ballast hopper car that was on the tracks.  There were 174 people on board at the time of the collision and this included passengers and crew members.

The investigation into the collision is still underway at this time and is being conducting by NTSB along with other police officials. Amtrak has been cooperating with the entire investigation. No further details have been given on the extent of  the injuries suffered by passengers on board.

Motorcycle Fatalities Decline After New Michigan Law Is Passed

In April 2012, a new law was passed in the state of Michigan that allowed select motorcyclists to operate their motorcycles without wearing helmets. This new law requires these motorcyclists to be older than 21-years-old, and either have completed a rider safety course or had their motorcycle license for a minimum of two years.

Data compiled from the Michigan State Police shows that there were less fatalities in 2012 than there were in the first eight months of 2011. In 2011 during that time frame, there were 89 motorcycle fatalities in the state. In the first half of 2012 there were 85 fatalities that were a result of motorcycle accidents. A motorcycle group in Michigan stated that the numbers declined even though more motorcycle registrations took place in the state.

The motorcycle group, American Bikers Aiming Toward Education, claims that the decline in motorcycle fatalities is due to the new helmet law being passed in the state. At this time, the data is too preliminary to make a direct connection between these two claims, according to a AAA of Michigan spokesperson. The spokesperson stated that other states that changed their motorcycle helmet laws saw an increase in fatalities over time.

More data will have to be reviewed in order to determine the correlation between the new motorcycle helmet law and the decline in fatalities across the state of Michigan. The spokesperson for AAA revealed that the company has predicted an extra 30 fatalities to occur as a result of the passing of the no-helmet law. nike air max blancas nike air max blancas nike air max blancas

CDC releases new study regarding teen drunk driving in the U.S.

Drinking and driving among teenagers in the United States is occurring less frequently according to the Vital Signs study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers who conducted the study analyzed thousands of surveys that were completed by high school teenagers in 41 states throughout the country. Questions on the surveys pertained to alcohol-related scenarios, including drinking and driving. In 1991, it was determined that 22.3 percent of all high school students surveyed had driven a vehicle after drinking alcohol within 30 days of taking the survey.

Two decades later, in 2011, the same study regarding these habits was given to high school teens in the United States. The percentage of teenagers who reported drinking and driving declined to 10.3 percent in 2011.

Drunk driving can cause severe consequences, including fatal car accidents. If you have been injured in a car accident that was caused by a drunk driver, you may be entitled to compensation for your suffering.
