Month of November Has Most Deer-Car Collisions

Officials from State Farm Insurance have used information collected by the Federal Highway Administration in order to calculate the number of deer and car collisions that occur in the state of Michigan. According to data, the most common month for a collision to occur between a deer and a car is November and officials are hoping this report will help remind drivers to pay extra attention to the roadways.

This year, information shows that a Michigan driver has odds of 1 in 72 to strike a deer. This number is compared to last year’s 1 in 83 motorists. Another report was recently released by the Michigan Deer Crash Coalition that showed that deer and car collisions have decreased by four percent in 2011 compared to 2010.

While this may be true, officials added that many collisions involving deers are not reported so the actual numbers may be much higher.

The five counties in the state with the  most accidents are Kent, Oakland, Jackson, Calhoun and Montcalm. Nearly 18 percent of all deer-car collisions in the state occur in the month of November.

The month of October has the second highest rate of deer collisions. Officials are reminding drivers that deer usually travel in groups so if you see one, there are usually more following.

Also, deer are most active between the hours of 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. so make sure to use high beam lights to brighten the area. Finally, officials are reminding drivers that deer whistles mounted on vehicles are not 100 percent effective. nike air max 97 nike air max 97 nike air max 97

Icy roads in Michigan lead to several accidents

Tuesday’s overnight rain led to icy road conditions on Wednesday in the state of Michigan.

Numerous accidents have been reported throughout the state that police are responding to. In certain areas of Michigan, the temperature, reaching below 0, made it impossible for the ice to melt.

Weather conditions are expected to improve over the weekend, with temperatures spanning from 40-50 degrees. The Thanksgiving weekend will bring with it an increased amount of motor vehicles on the road. Caution is stressed when traveling for the holiday so as to avoid car accidents.
