A female pit bull in Cedar Rapids is now in the custody of Animal Control after she attacked a third person.
The latest victim was attacked around 10 p.m. on Monday night while standing in the driveway of her own home. The 44-year-old woman was the next door neighbor to the dog’s owner, and the pit bull caused several injuries to her body. She was taken to a nearby hospital, and her current condition is unknown.
Ten days prior to this attack, a father and his son were also injured by the violent dog. The man’s 7-year-old son was cornered by three canines, with the female pit bull being the one that attacked. He received more than 10 wounds due to the confrontation, and his father suffered a gash to his leg while he pulled his son from the situation.
Animal Control now has the correct animal in it’s custody, and the dog will be put down as a result of the dog attacks. The other two canines involved in the initial attack have also been apprehended.

Nearly 4.5 million people are bitten by a dog every year. Daily, 866 people are sent to the emergency room for dog bites and out of this, nearly 26 are admitted to the hospital a day.
Only a small percentage of the increase was due to population growth of humans and dogs, but researchers are confused to what is fueling the increase. Experts in the field are currently studying animals in order to determine why these incidents are occurring.

In Michigan, there is a debate over whether pit bulls are companions or killers. Many shelters will not take pit bulls in after they are left on the streets because they are feel that they are too dangerous.
Pit bull lovers say that they are the most loyal and intelligent dogs when they are raised correctly. Many dogs are left when their owners are ill-prepared to raise them, so the dogs end up roaming the streets. The Michigan Humane Society will capture dogs and after three attempts to find the owner, they wait seven days and if no response, the dog is put down.
This fact is disturbing to pit bull fans, but officials from the Humane Society said that many pit bulls are associated with dog fighting and you can not put them in a family’s home if the dog has a history of violence.
