Ottawa man arrested in connection with canal fires

A man from Ottawa was arrested on Sunday for allegedly being connected to several fires that were started in the canal path.

The 52-year-old man was charged with a Class A misdemeanor, criminal damage to property, after allegedly setting fire to the Illinois and Michigan canals on Sunday.

Ottawa firefighters were working to extinguish multiple fires down the canal that were set less then 15 minutes apart. The fire department also extinguished eight other fires on the canal that were thought to be set intentionally.

A witness that was nearby when multiple fires began used a cell phone camera to capture photos of the man in custody. The witness said that he saw the man bent down near dry weeds and then smoke began to rise in front of him. Additional charges may be filed against the man after the investigation is complete.

Fire officials give Michigan residents tips to avoid fires during winter

Local and state fire officials in Michigan are informing residents about the increased risk of fire during the winter months and giving advice on how to avoid this.

One tip that firefighters offered is to make sure that fire hydrants are kept clear of snow because if there is a fire, officials need to be able to get the fire hydrant as quickly as possible. Fire officials have warned people to be careful while using space heaters.

When using a space heater or similar device, make sure to keep combustibles at least three feet away. If you lose power and have to use candles for light, make sure to blow the flame out before going to sleep. Never use an oven to heat your home either. Make sure to check smoke detectors once a month and change their batteries once a year.
