Listeria-contaminated cantaloupes may be deadliest outbreak in recent history

The Center of Disease Control has said that the recent listeria outbreak linked to cantaloupes may be the deadliest in history. Thirteen people have been killed as a result and 72 people have been sickened.

The reports have come from 18 states across the country and it has now surpassed the deadly salmonella outbreak from peanuts that occurred in 2009. Additional deaths are currently being researched and officials have said that the death toll could increase to 16.

A dangerous factor associated with the outbreak is that their is incubation period between the time the cantaloupe was eaten and when symptoms appear. A few of the states that have reported illnesses include California, New Mexico, Colorado, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Oklahoma, Missouri, Montana, and Maryland.

Dole announces recall of Italian style salad

Dole Vegetables have announced that Italian style salads will be involved in a recall due to possible Listeria contamination.

The recall was announced after a random sampling and nearly 2,800 cases of the Dole Italian Blend are involved. Also, 442 cases of Italian Style Salad of the Kroger Fresh Selections brand.

On both brands, the ‘Best By’ date is June 19, 2011 and this can be found on the top right hand of the package. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning. Symptoms include diarrhea, muscle pains, and gastrointestinal infection.

Tomatos products involved in recall by Raley’s

Raley’s has announced the recall of many products after they tested positive for salmonella contamination.

A spokeswoman for the company announced that they pulled all products from the shelves and warehouses after the possible contamination was found.

The recalled tomatoes were produced in Six L’s Packing Co. and the contamination was found from a random sampling. The product was made on April 11 and sold from April 26-29. They were distributed in South Carolina, Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Canada, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

American Spoon Foods recalls salsa for unknown allergen

American Spoon Foods has announced the recall of three products because of the presence of wheat, an undeclared allergen, that could cause serious attacks to those who are sensitive to it.

The affected products include the Apple Chipotle Salsa, Maple Barbecue Grilling Sauce and the Pumpkin Chipotle Roasting Sauce.

Shelled hazelnuts recalled due to E. Coli contamination

DeFranco & Sons has announced the recall of certain packages of hazelnuts after it was found that they may be contaminated with E. Coli.

There were seven cases of people getting E. Coli infections. These nuts were sold nationwide, but the cases were in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

The recalled nuts were sold under the product names Sunripe, George Packing, Northwest Hazelnut and Firestone Farms. The FDA and company are urging consumers to check their products in order to see if it is involved in the recall.

Rice Crackers recalled after milk product not listed on package

Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that they will be recalling Asian Gourmet Cheese Rice Crackers due to undeclared milk products and colors.

The recall includes all of the products with the UPC code of 076606-710889. The recall was initiated by the company when they discovered that there were cheese products and colors not listed on the ingredients of the crackers.

The products were distributed to retailers in Alabama, Michigan, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee, Maine, Maryland, New York, North Carolina, and Ohio.
